About

XHDBench is a Qt-based X-program for testing the output speed of several devices (hard disks, CD-ROMs, floppy drives) and the interaction between them. We wanted to create a graphic Linux tool similar to the Adaptec Benchmark for windows but not restricted to Adaptec managed devices. We don't want to make a better
bonnie, because bonnie calculates the speed of a filesystem. We want to immediately see the speed of a device and the interaction of the devices.

Important notes

DISCLAIMER: There could be bugs, so it is possible that a device could possibly be damaged. There's no warranty for anything!
You should be root for accessing the devices. The program reads directly from the devices independent from any filesystems. The static linked version runs even at hosts that don't have X or X libraries installed, you only need a remote X-server for showing the window which can be quite handy for those nice ultra-slim Linux servers :-)
If media devices are not recognized, it possibly helps inserting some recognized & properly formatted media. If you use modules, try accessing the non-recognized devices before starting the program or loading the modules by hand.

Hints, remarks, suggestions, bug reports... are very welcome!

News

02/19/2002 I am actively taking role of maintainer for this project now. I was having problems compiling XHDBench 0.5.3 on QT2, made a bunch of changes and informed Ali & Jan. Jan responded:

Hallo John!

Thanks. We loved it too, but we forgot it ...

> If you are interested in the diff file, please reply.
We haven't maintained this program for nearly 4 years, so
if you are interested in you can take over the complete program.
We regulary get messages from freshmeat
(http://freshmeat.net/projects/xhdbench/) concerning the
maintenance but we never answered.

Best wishes Jan

Soooooooo..... I am releasing 0.5.4 with changes necessary to compile under QT2. I am now actively using QT3 and KDE 3.0b2. This code works with QT3 as well.
Hope you like this new page layout. The old page is mirrored here with old binaries and source still available. I have also changed Jan's & Ali's e-mail address from @ to *AT* so they dont get spammed, but by all means tell them what a nice program XHDBench is. It is their creation! :-)
